It is a street drug that can be smoked, snorted or even “shot up” (intravenous use.) Heroin has a notorious reputation and is associated with pictures of emaciated junkies that have needles in their arms. Which in some instances is accurate. In others, well, not so much. Regardless though, we aren’t here to talk about what we already know about heroin. We are here to share the surprising facts you might not have known. For instance, where the name junkies came from. Facts about heroin #1: To support their habits, East coast heroin users in cities like New York and Philly would collect and sell scrap metal. And were called “junkies” because of it. Scrap yard, junk yard, junkies. You get it? That is where the name junkies came from.

Facts about heroin #2: The name heroin is actually derived from the word Heroisch which is German for heroic. It is said that heroin supposedly makes a person feel heroic. So no, it is not coincidence that the word heroin has the word hero in it as well.

Facts about heroin #3: Heroin was actually sold as an over-the-counter medication at one point. As a cough syrup to be exact.

Facts about heroin #4: It can take only a few short days of regular heroin use to become addicted to it. What we mean by that is that the user will experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop using it.

Facts about heroin #5: The average heroin addict uses around 150mg to 250mg of the drug per day.

Facts about heroin #6: There are actually over 1.2 million “occasional or recreational” heroin users in the United States, and over 200,000 of them classify as addicted to the drug.

Facts about heroin #7: Heroin overdoses have caused more deaths than traffic accidents in the past few years.

Facts about heroin #8: There are at least 700,000 people in the US that need heroin addiction treatment and aren’t getting it.

Facts about heroin #9: A heroin addict will spend around 80 to 200 dollars a day to keep up with their heroin habit. That is not including the cost of needles, cotton or any other expenses.

Facts about heroin #10: Heroin on the street goes for a mere 10 dollars a day. But these prices do vary from state to state and even city to city.

Facts about heroin #11: A little more than 80% of heroin users shoot it up (intravenously) with a partner or another individual. But still, 80% of heroin users who overdose are found by paramedics, all alone.
