affordable care actThe Affordable Care Act or ACA (Obamacare) recognizes drug addiction and alcoholism as chronic diseases that must be covered by health insurance plans, and in so doing marks a major transformation of addiction care. The biggest change is that 40 million people could enter substance abuse treatment, opening a huge market for addiction care. If you or a loved one is dealing with a substance abuse problem, the Affordable Care Act could be your saving grace and here is why:

Benefits of  the Affordable Care Act for Substance Abuse

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) put in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will make health insurance available to many more people, lower health care costs, guarantee more health care choices, and enhance the quality of health care for all Americans.  The ACA requires insurance companies to provide substance use treatment, and encourages medical providers to screen for problem drinking and drug use while allowing them to bill for doing it. The Affordable Care Act also increases the number of people who will be eligible for health care under Medicaid in 2014, some of whom may need intervention and treatment services for substance use disorders.

This is a huge benefit of the Affordable Care Act for substance abuse because many people who are suffering from substance abuse can’t get the help they need. Unfortunately, it is usually the ones who want the help the most that can’t get it. Now, with the Affordable Care Act everyone who needs help and wants help will be able to get it, no questions asked. Finally, for the first time, substance abuse will be considered something that HAS to be covered by health insurance plans.

What it was like before the ACA

Before the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare as it has been named, insurance companies didn’t have to cover substance abuse treatment or interventions. In fact, interventions and treatment has had to fight with many insurance companies to get substance abusers longer stays in treatment or even to get them covered for treatment at all. Now, with the Affordable Care Act, going to substance abuse treatment will be fairly easy opening up more opportunities not only for the addict and alcoholic but also for treatment centers. With more people capable of going to treatment it will be even more essential that quality treatment centers are found and utilized.

Finding the right treatment with the Affordable Care Act

For addicts and alcoholics, going to any old treatment may work but it won’t always work. Often times it is essential that someone with a substance abuse problem find the right treatment center. Since it is now going to be so easy to go to treatment many more options are going to open up in the substance abuse field. Using a referral source is probably the best way to find the right treatment center. Interventionists are also a great way to find the right quality treatment for substance abuse. Because interventionists will also be covered by insurance it will be highly more efficient to utilize their services to not only help the substance abuser get help but also to find the right treatment center, IOP and aftercare services.

For the first time, addiction and alcoholism, substance abuse, will be able to be treated with ease. The benefits of Affordable Care Act for substance abuse are something you should be aware of and something that could significantly help you if you have any kind of substance abuse problem, that you are dealing with, in you or your loved one.
