It has gotta be a hoax right? As of right now it doesn’t look like it. We took a look at Palcohol’s site and while it is pretty “antique,” it kind of seems legit. It asks you to join their mailing list, follow them on Facebook and to also follow them on Twitter.

What IS Palcohol?

So what is it? It is powdered alcohol that can be added to a liquid or snorted if you are brave and looking to lose some brain cells. It was approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Trade Bureau. The site tells us that it was approved awhile ago, but that some of their labels were made public, making the product and their site very public even though it hasn’t been released yet. They are also still pending the approval of some of their labels.

The Inventor of Palcohol

Palcohol was created by a guy named Mark Phillips. Phillips is supposedly an active guy who is into hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, and well, drinking. He found that lugging around giant bottles of booze doing his favorite things didn’t really work. He wanted something more convenient. So he thought of having alcohol in powdered form. It would be light to carry.

Powdered alcohol of course wasn’t available. So he began searching and working with scientists around the world, until he came up with powdered alcohol. Then he dubbed it Palcohol.

What’s the alcohol content?

The alcohol content in Palcohol is said to be about the same as a standard mix drink. What is in it? Alcohol, and the cocktail versions also have sucralose (sweetener). All of them are touted as being gluten free as well.

How is it made?

How is it made? It is all about the sealing, the carbs, and the sugar derivatives. It is a fairly involved chemical process but it works. That is really all you need to know.

Different Flavors and Varieties

Palcohol plans on releasing six versions sold in a pouch. The V powder which is vodka distilled four times. And the R version which is Puerto Rican rum.

V and R can be used two ways. One is by adding five ounces of your favorite mix to make, for example, Rum and Coke, Vodka and Orange juice etc. Or you could just add water.

The cocktail versions include margarita, cosmopolitan, mojito, and lemon drop.

When is it going to be released?

Palcohol is said to be released this fall and will be sold in liquor stores across the country. Right now the company says they are awaiting on approval of their labels (NOT their product, the product has been approved.) You have to be of drinking age to use it. But chances are this is going to be a teen drinking nightmare. College kids anyone?

And what about snorting it?

As for the whole snorting thing…the site recommends not doing it. They call those who have asked about it goofballs and say it isn’t a smart way to use the product. They say “you would feel a lot of pain for very little gain. Just use it the right way.”

This white powder….don’t put this up your nose…

Your thoughts?

So what do you think? Disaster waiting to happen? Don’t care? Is it a hoax?

It doesn’t sound like it. Hopefully this doesn’t end up being a killer.
