After not being able to reach Hoffman a friend phoned 911 where officials say it was pretty clear he had overdosed. Investigators found a syringe in his left forearm and at least two plastic envelopes with what appeared to be heroin nearby. There were also five empty plastic envelopes in a trash bin police said.
“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” the official said. “The syringe was in his arm.”
In 2006, Hoffman admitted that he had succumbed to a substance abuse problem after graduating from NYU’s drama school but that he got sober in rehab. “It was all that (drugs and alcohol), yeah. It was anything I could get my hands on…I liked it all.” He told 60 Minutes at the time.
Last year Hoffman had checked himself into a rehab again for 10 days after relapsing in 2012. Before that he had 23 years sober. This was last May.
More recently witnesses say Hoffman appeared “disheveled and pasty” last month during a party for his movie “God’s Pocket” at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
He declined interviews and his reps kept telling interviewers he needed a minute and didn’t feel like coming down yet. Later he seemed more relaxed but would only talk about the movie.
Hoffman won an oscar for his performance in the 2005 film, “Capote,” and recieved three Academy Award nominations as best supporting actor. He was currently filming for the newest “Hunger Games” film. He leaves behind a slew of disappointed and devastated fans as well as his friends and family which includes his 3 daughters.
“I try to live my life in such a way that I don’t have profound regrets .” -Philip Hoffman 2008.
